Boarding Activities

Boarders enjoy a vast range of activities every evening after supper. They are blessed by their natural surroundings and facilities and take full advantage of them. Walking, clay pigeon shooting, archery, mountain biking, tech club, art club and debating to name but a few. There is also access to academic studies in the evening with workshops and clinics. It is expected that all boarders attend at least two Activities per week.

To exercise boarders’ minds, a series of General Studies sessions also run every week. To date, the Boarders have enjoyed talks by Matthew Syed, Matt Dickinson and Shaun Bailey.

Of course, life’s not all go. There are common rooms for each year group to relax in with daily newspapers, pool, table tennis, table football, board games and a TV. We do stick firmly to the age classifications on any films and the TVs are not on all the time.

The evening pastoral team consists of the Heads of Boarding, Matrons, School Nurses and Corridor Staff. Evening activities are provided by teachers with many living onsite or in the village. They provide boys with opportunities to try new activities and gain new experiences.

Special Occasions

There are many special occasions for the Boarders. The key events are:

  • The Christmas Party - This is the highlight of the boarding calendar. Boys and staff dress smartly, sing carols under the tree in the Front Hall and have a Christmas feast in the Centenary Hall. Every boy is given a Christmas present and then the boys and staff put on a festive show.
  • The Boarders’ Quiz - This is held at the end of the Spring Term and competition between dorms is fierce as well as great fun.
  • The Boarders’ Barbecue - This is held at the end of the Summer Term. The barbecues are lit and all the staff join in with an evening of food, games and fun on the lawn. This is usually when the Boarding House say an informal goodbye to boys and staff who are leaving.

Boarders also enjoy many themed suppers throughout the year. The boys have enjoyed Chinese New Year, Harry Potter and Japanese food.

Weekend Boarders

Boarders that stay in school over the weekend have the opportunity to take part in a number of exciting outings and activities from bubble football, to archery and theatre trips. There is plenty to keep them busy as well as always having time to relax and enjoy the open space at Caldicott.
