Boarding at Caldicott

Boarding lies at the heart of Caldicott; it helps build a unique sense of community. The boarding house plays a key role in developing the School’s strong sense of family values, encouraging boys to live and work together harmoniously, build friendships and develop independence before going onto their senior schools. The boarding staff are on hand around the clock, providing a happy home like environment.

It is hoped that boys will flourish in our beautiful surroundings and they will be offered the attention, care and guidance that will allow them to develop as young people.

The Boarding House

There are no separate boarding houses at Caldicott. The boarding house is split into three areas: Years 5 and 6, Year 7 and Year 8. The dormitories range in size from three to seven beds. The Snug (upstairs common room), The Pantry (upstairs boarding kitchen), the Boarding Office, The Den (laundry sorting room) and The Laundry are conveniently placed centrally with easy access from all dorms. The Health Centre is also on the first floor in a central location.

The Sports Hall, computer rooms, library, common rooms and academic block are all in use until late evening and at weekends. Teaching staff are fully involved in the boarding community, whether it is running an evening activity, being available to help with work, on duty in the boarding house, reading to a dormitory or playing a game with boys.

Types of Boarding

All boys at Caldicott board on a full or weekly basis in Years 7 and 8, with younger boys in Year 3 to 6 having the option to experience boarding on a flexi or occasional basis. From Year 5, full and weekly boarding is available alongside flexi and occasional boarding, with the majority of Year 7 and 8 boys going home on a Saturday after matches and returning to school on either Sunday evening or Monday morning. There is a full programme of activities for weekend boarders.

We define flexi boarding as either one or two nights per week for at least half a term. This can be on any weeknight, Monday to Friday (boys in Years 3 and 4 would be collected on a Saturday after breakfast, by 0830).

We also offer occasional boarding, which means a boy boarding on an ad hoc basis (space-permitting) up to a full week once a term.

This extensive boarding provision has been developed into a smooth transition that guides Caldicott boys through boarding alongside friends, in a setting boys already know and love. It fosters a unique sense of community and builds lifelong friendships as well as aiding their development of independence before they go on to their senior schools at 13+.
