The Tait Tens

26 September 2017

On Sunday 24 September, 13 boys travelled to Barnard Castle School to play in the Tait 10s rugby festival.  Below is a match report from Filip E and Freddie H (5th Form).

13 boys from the Under 12 A team went to Barnard Castle to play a 10-a-side rugby festival, called the Tait 10’s named after two illustrious old boys of the school, brothers Matthew and Alex Tait who are professional Rugby players.

We drove to Kings Cross Station in London and went on a 2 ½ hour train journey to Darlington and drove to Barnard Castle. We then stayed at a boarding house in Barnard castle, played games and watched a movie before going to bed.

Our first match was at 1030 against the hosts and we won comfortably, with a 30 - 0 win. Our next game was arguably our hardest match of the tournament and that was against Roddillian. They were a very physical side and we went 10 - 0 down but two quick tries before half-time got us back into the game. In the second half, we conceded again to leave us 15 - 10 down with two minutes to go but we came back quickly and managed to win the game 20 - 15. We then won our final group game, which put us into the top group.

We won both top group matches which saw us go into the final against St.Olaves. It was again a very physical contest but in the end, we came out comfortable winners at 20 - 5.

Player of the Tournament 2017 was Freddie H.

Many thanks to Mr Foster and Mr Lane for taking us, and to Mr Hutchings for organising the trip.

The results were as follows:

  • v Barnard Castle: 30 – 0 (Higgins x2, Doraisamy x2, Edstrom, Petterson)
  • v Roddillian: 20 – 15 (Tuipolotu x2, Higgins x2)
  • v Bradford Grammar: 35 – 0 (Higgins x3, Tremayne x2, Hope, Turner)
  • v Woodhouse Grove: 20 – 5 (Petterson, Edstrom, Relton, Tuipolotu)
  • v QEGS Wakefield: 20 – 10 (Higgins x2, Tuipolotu, Deane-Johns)
  • v St. Olaves: 20 – 5 (Edstrom, Teague, Higgins, Tuipolotu)
